Can I have two versions of Excel at one time?

I recently upgraded to Pro 2010, but I still need to use 2007 on some things.  Now all of the 2007 aps are not working.

Is there any way I can talk to a person.  I am a dinosauer when it comes to computers and I will need some one to hold my hand through the process.

I just went through something like that.  The answer is a
qualified "yes".  "Qualified" because there are plenty of caveats.

First, be sure to read
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2121447.

Second, note that in KB 2121447, Microsoft states:  "You can install and use more than one version of Microsoft Office on a single computer.  [....]
However, we do not recommend this".  Translation:  MS does not test this thoroughly; it was not a design objection; so some parts of MSWin or Office might not work well.

For example, if you install 2007 and 2010 in the proper order, namely 2010 last, all Excel file extension Folder Options can only point to the Excel 2010 program.  In particular, if you click on "xls" files, they will run in Excel 2010 in compatibility mode.
(Unless you explicitly run Excel 2003 first.)

That might not be much of a problem for you, since you seem to be coming from 2007.  But the same principle might apply to the "2007 aps" that you have.

(I don't know why your "2007 aps" would not work with 2010.  AFAIK, there are few differences between Office 2007 and 2010, except that Excel 2010 does have some internal "improvements" and some additional function names.

There is no one to hold your hand, at least not at Microsoft.

If you are a corporate customer, you need to rely on your internal IT department or hire a consultant.

If you are non-corporate customer and you purchased your computer from a major manufacturer -- e.g.
HP or Dell -- you might be able to get tech support from them.

But caution:  in my experience, those tech support engineers know only a tad more than you do.  Usually they simply read a "trouble tree" that someone prepared for them.  Step 2 is manufacturer-installed System Restore image, or so it seems.  Translation:
I would trust the manufacturer's tech support but as much as I trust the (US) IRS help phone line, which isn't much.

(That is especially true at this time, between Dec and Jan inclusively.  I can imagine that manufacturers have hired a slew of temp workers to handle the increased phone calls that they can expect due to holiday purchases.)

Also, I must say that you need to beware of suggestions from "experts" in this forum.  Some of their suggestions are tailored toward power users, not "dinosaurs" like you and me who need hand-holding.

The simple solution is:  after you install 2010 in a manner that preserves 2007, accept the fact that you need to migrate toward using 2010.  Office 2007 apps should be used only as transition tools.

For example, note what KB 2121447 has to say about flip-flopping between 2007 and 2010 MSWord.

Boot in Safe Mode:

  • Open Run command as previously described
  • Type MSConfig
  • Click on Boot tab
  • Tick Safe boot in Boot option
  • Select Network
  • Click Apply and OK
  • Reboot your system

Your system will boot in Safe mode with Networking. You may now try and open Windows Store and should not see any errors.
